Actors Johnny Depp and Penélope Cruz are set to collaborate once again in the forthcoming action thriller, “Day Drinker.” This film marks a reunion for the duo, who have previously appeared together in notable works such as “Blow,” “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” and “Murder on the Orient Express.”
“Day Drinker” revolves around the life of a cruise ship bartender who encounters a cryptic day drinker. The narrative intricately weaves their lives together as they become ensnared within a shadowy criminal underworld, revealing unexpected connections between them. Directed by Marc Webb, known for “The Amazing Spider-Man” and Disney’s anticipated “Snow White,” the project is under the aegis of Lionsgate, which is set to commence international sales at the American Film Market.
Adam Fogelson, Chair of Lionsgate’s Motion Picture Group, remarked, “’Day Drinker’ seamlessly integrates a commercially appealing premise with astonishing twists, all unfolding within a captivating world. There is no better filmmaker than Marc, nor two more ideally suited actors than Johnny and Penélope to breathe life into this vision.”
The film is produced by Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee of Thunder Road, who have been instrumental in backing the successful “John Wick” franchise for Lionsgate. Additional producers include Adam Kolbrenner, whose portfolio includes “The Tomorrow War” and “Free Guy,” alongside Zach Dean, who authored the original screenplay and collaborated on “Fast X.” Executive production falls under the purview of 30West, with Chelsea Kujawa supervising for Lionsgate, and Dan Freedman facilitating negotiations.
“Day Drinker” signifies Depp’s re-entry into the Hollywood scene following his widely publicized legal disputes with ex-wife Amber Heard. Following a 2020 U.K. libel trial that resulted in his exit from the “Fantastic Beasts” series, Depp successfully reclaimed his narrative by winning a subsequent defamation case in the U.S. in 2022.
Recently, Depp secured a leading role in “Jeanne du Barry” and directed “Modi, Three Days on the Wing of Madness,” which made its debut at the San Sebastián International Film Festival. During Cannes 2022, he articulated his mixed sentiments regarding his prolonged absence from Hollywood, suggesting that feeling ostracized by the industry was impossible to ignore. He stated, “When you’re asked to resign from a film due to something as nebulous as vowels and consonants floating in the air, you undeniably sense a boycott.” However, he clarified, “I don’t feel boycotted by Hollywood, because I don’t dwell on it.”
The announcement of Depp and Cruz’s casting was first reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
