Director Ryan Coogler expressed profound gratitude towards cinema-goers who embraced his latest film, “Sinners.” Their support not only surpassed expectations but also propelled the supernatural thriller to the pinnacle of the box office during its inaugural weekend.
In a message shared on his X page on Tuesday, Coogler acknowledged the significant effort required to attend a screening, extending thanks to those who “secured babysitters and coordinated carpools,” as well as individuals who “adjusted their work commitments.”
“I want to extend my appreciation to all who viewed the film multiple times, and those who recommended it to others, whether in person or through social media and text chains,” he remarked. “I was fortunate to create a film inspired by my lineage and heritage, yet it has always been a project aimed at engaging theater audiences.”
Coogler, who both wrote and directed “Sinners,” crafted a narrative centered on twin brothers—another collaboration with actor Michael B. Jordan—who encounter unforeseen supernatural elements after inaugurating a juke joint in their Mississippi hometown, a venue celebrating Southern Black cultural heritage and music.
The cast also features Hailee Steinfeld, emerging talent Miles Caton, Jack O’Connell, and Delroy Lindo, among others.
Debuting in both IMAX and standard formats, “Sinners” exceeded industry expectations by amassing an impressive $45.6 million domestically during its opening weekend, far surpassing the projected $35 million. As of Tuesday, the film’s global earnings exceeded $71 million. (Warner Bros. Pictures disperses “Sinners,” with Warner Bros. Discovery serving as CNN’s parent entity.)
Coogler remarked that the film draws upon his own heritage, which has infused it with life and purpose, rendering the audience’s enthusiasm for the film particularly significant.
It also marks a groundbreaking moment in cinema history, as it is the first film to be shot using two distinct aspect ratios (Ultra Panavision 70 and IMAX) and subsequently released in a combination of both.
“Witnessing your reactions to the film has revitalized me and numerous others who cherish this art form,” Coogler further stated. “Together, we may expand the boundaries of what it means to be a blockbuster, what constitutes a horror film, and the demographics of an IMAX audience.”
Coogler is renowned for directing the acclaimed “Creed” trilogy, the poignant “Fruitvale Station,” and two “Black Panther” films under the Marvel banner, including the Oscar-nominated sequel.
