Spirit Airlines will sell its slots at LaGuardia Airport in New York City. The company is in bankruptcy. Spirit has 22 slots at the airport. These slots will be auctioned on July 9. The highest bidder will win the auction.
Slots are important. They decide which airlines can fly from busy airports. They also control how many flights an airline can have. Spirit’s slots at LaGuardia are worth about $87 million. A court must approve the sale before the winning airline can use the slots. Spirit stopped operations on May 2.
A new airline could add up to 12 daily flights to LaGuardia by autumn. Many airlines want to buy the slots. Frontier Airlines is interested. Its CEO said they will look at Spirit’s assets carefully. American Airlines also wants to join the bidding.
Other airlines, like Delta and JetBlue, have increased flights in Spirit’s previous markets. The FAA wants to see a budget airline buy the slots. United Airlines does not plan to take part in the bidding. Lastly, Canada’s Porter Airlines may also join the auction. Spirit used Terminal A at LaGuardia. This terminal is currently closed for upgrades.
