A rare 14-karat gold LEGO piece has been found at a Goodwill Warehouse in Pennsylvania and is now up for auction.
This LEGO piece, called the Bionicle Golden Kanohi Hau Mask, is believed to be one of only 30 in existence. It was found by workers at the warehouse in DuBois and is considered a valuable collector’s item. In 2001, some of these pieces were gifted to LEGO employees and the rest were awarded through a contest.
Goodwill Vice President of E-commerce and Technology, Chad Smith, stated that there are only 30 gold pieces, with some silver and platinum ones also available. When the workers discovered the LEGO piece, they didn’t realize its true value at first. It was included in a box of random jewelry from the State College store and had already been processed through donations.
After realizing the true value of the LEGO piece, Goodwill decided to auction it online in hopes of maximizing the donation. The initial bid for the gold LEGO was $33,000, but when the winner failed to pay up, the item was relisted for auction.
The auction has already reached over $4,000, with the bidding continuing to increase. Goodwill is expecting it to reach at least $5,000, which would make it the highest amount paid for a LEGO piece.
