Not long ago, celebrated Friends actor, Matthew Perry, felt as though he was finally surmounting his deep-seated struggles with addiction, his stepfather Keith Morrison has revealed. This revelation came months after Perry’s death last October, providing a chilling insight into the actor’s decades-long battle with substance abuse. Morrison, in his somber commentary, acknowledged the harsh truth that addiction is never truly defeated, a fact Perry himself was acutely aware of.
Perry, renowned for his candidness about his struggles with alcohol and drugs, met a tragic end at the age of 54. He was found lifeless in his hot tub, leaving his loved ones and fans around the world in shock and grief. A subsequent autopsy report unveiled a stark reality – Perry’s passing was influenced by a lethal concoction of drugs, namely ketamine and buprenorphine, and underlying coronary artery disease. His end was further accelerated by drowning. The report also starkly highlighted that despite being clean for a period of 19 months, the actor had been undergoing ketamine infusion therapy for his mental health challenges, specifically depression and anxiety.
Mr. Morrison, who had a strong bond with Perry since becoming part of his family at age 12, articulated his grief with touching authenticity. The immediate impact might have faded into a dull ache, but the emptiness Perry’s death left behind continues to haunt him daily. On Hoda Kotb’s Making Space podcast, he poignantly compared his grief to a relentless assailant — ever present, ever demanding.
In his recounting, Morrison, a veteran correspondent for Dateline NBC, emphasized that Perry was in a relatively happy space prior to his demise. Perry’s confession of happiness, after a significant period of time, was indeed a comfort, yet it also made his untimely passing feel profoundly unjust.
During the interview, the 76-year old Morrison unveiled his anguish for the first time following Perry’s death. This raw portrayal punctuated the globally shared grief, adding a deeply personal dimension to the loss. Images of Morrison, accompanied by his wife, arriving at Perry’s home the night he died are etched into the collective memory of Perry’s fans.
Throughout the conversation, Morrison painted an evocative portrait of Perry, a figure known for his energetic personality. Whether it involved reminiscing about his laughter-filled conversations or merely recalling his indomitable presence, Perry’s memories remained vivid, echoing powerfully in the minutiae of Morrison’s daily life.
Perry, an indelible character both on-screen and off-screen, displayed a riveting spectrum of emotions. His charm was magnetic, commandingly drawing attention even in silence. Notwithstanding their contrasting dispositions, Morrison reiterated that their bond was cordial and tightening with every passing day.
In the public arena, Perry’s struggle with an addiction that Morrison termed “virulent” was a formidable challenge. However, Perry was cognizant of when he needed help and never hesitated to seek treatment. Despite these efforts, the monstrous hold addiction had on him persisted, casting a grim shadow over his life.
Even in his battles, Perry found a way to help others, becoming an outspoken advocate for substance use treatment. His death served as the catalyst for the inception of the Matthew Perry Foundation, founded by his mother and stepfather, aimed at providing assistance to those struggling with addiction. The foundation stands as an enduring testament to Perry’s legacy, a beacon of hope for those caught in the devastating grip of addiction.
