The Justice Department is looking into high beef prices in the USA. They are checking if big meat companies are doing something wrong. They will review over 3 million documents and talk to people in the industry.
Four large companies control 85% of the beef market. Many of these companies are partly owned by Brazil. The acting Attorney General, Todd Blanche, asked people to report any bad practices. If someone helps find problems, they could get money from any fines over $1 million.
Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins said the USA has fewer cattle now. As of January 1, there were about 86.2 million cattle. This is the lowest number since the 1950s.
The government realizes the cattle supply needs to grow. Rollins said they are working on solving this problem. They want to support American ranchers and protect food security.
The Justice Department has not said when they might finish their investigation. They will also look for help from whistleblowers who have important information.
