Astronauts on the International Space Station (ISS) saw a bright green aurora. This happened above the southern part of Earth. Astronaut Jessica Meir shared a video of the aurora, called Aurora Australis. This is the southern version of the northern lights. The video shows the lights moving in waves. Meir said it was beautiful and amazing.
The aurora shows colourful lights. These lights come from a solar event. This means energy from the Sun interacts with Earth’s atmosphere. This is called space weather. NASA explains that auroras are a dance of particles and magnetism.
Jessica Meir felt wonder when she saw the aurora. She posted about it online. She wants everyone to know how special this event is. The word “aurora” means “dawn” in Latin. It is also the name of the Roman goddess of dawn. More astronauts will continue to study auroras from space. They hope to learn more about these beautiful lights.
