Astronauts saw a bright green aurora from the International Space Station (ISS). This aurora is called aurora australis. It is the southern version of the northern lights. Jessica Meir, an astronaut, shared a video of it. She took this video from the SpaceX Dragon craft outside the ISS.
The aurora glowed and moved like a dance in the sky. Meir said it looked beautiful and made her feel amazed. This show happened because of a recent event from the Sun. NASA explains that auroras are colourful lights in the sky. They happen when particles from the Sun interact with Earth’s atmosphere.
The word “aurora” means “dawn” in Latin. It is also named after the Roman goddess of dawn. Scientists study these lights to learn more about space weather. Space weather is how the Sun affects the Earth. The ISS will continue to capture more stunning visuals of auroras in the future.
