The Super Mega Skarmory Raid Day introduces the Z-A Mega Evolutions to Pokémon GO, revitalising the Steel/Flying type Pokémon Skarmory within raid battles. Originally a popular choice in the Little and Great League formats, Skarmory had limited effectiveness in Player versus Environment (PvE) scenarios. However, its new mega evolution enhances its stats, raising questions about its performance in the current Steel and Flying categories.
Mega Skarmory boasts an attack stat of 273, which is respectable but places it well below the top tier of Steel and Flying attackers. Despite its solid defensive stat of 228 and the ability to support teammates, Mega Skarmory’s overall impact is limited. Although it has ten resistances, notably to Bug, Grass, and Poison types, its dual typing causes it to be vulnerable to Ice and Rock attacks, types that Steel Pokémon normally resist.
In the Steel meta, Mega Skarmory ranks lower than other Steel types, lagging behind popular choices like Metagross and Lucario. Its weaker Charged Attack, Flash Cannon, does not enhance its appeal, leading to its exclusion in many raid strategies.
Conversely, in the Flying meta, Mega Skarmory’s unique typing becomes an advantage. Its resistance to Bug and Grass damage makes it a useful option against certain Raid Bosses, especially when playing in groups. However, other powerful Flying types, like Mega Rayquaza and Mega Charizard Y, overshadow it.
Overall, while Mega Skarmory serves as a budget-friendly choice in Raid battles due to its cost-efficiency and defensive strengths, it fails to match the potency of top-tier attackers in the Steel category.
