Mosquitoes with West Nile virus have been found in three counties in Minnesota. This news makes health officials warn people to be careful.
The Metropolitan Mosquito Control District (MMCD) collected samples from Hennepin, Ramsey, and Dakota counties. The samples tested positive for West Nile virus on June 17. This is the first time this year that the virus has been found. It usually appears in Minnesota during this time.
Last year, there were over 120 cases of West Nile virus in Minnesota. About 50 of these cases were in the Twin Cities. Culex tarsalis mosquitoes carry the virus to humans, according to MMCD.
The MMCD is increasing its work to watch for mosquitoes and treat areas with more risk. Residents are asked to use insect repellent, wear long sleeves, and clear any standing water. These actions can help reduce mosquito bites and the risk of the virus.
