The World Cup has a tradition of showcasing the host nation’s food. This year, ranch dressing, a popular American sauce made from buttermilk, is gaining attention from fans. Tourists visiting the US are trying ranch for the first time, with one European visitor saying on Reddit that “ranch dressing should be a human right.”
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA), which checks luggage at airports, has noticed the trend. They humorously reminded travelers about the liquid limit for carry-on bags, which is 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres). A standard ranch dressing bottle, however, is 16 ounces (473 millilitres). The TSA suggested fans pack ranch dressing in checked luggage instead.
Ranch dressing has been the top salad dressing in the US for many years, according to the Association for Dressings and Sauces. It can be used as a dip for a variety of foods, like chicken wings and pizza. The dressing was invented in the 1950s by a plumber and later popularised by the Clorox Company in the 1970s, creating a bottled version.
As many as 10 million international tourists may visit the US for the World Cup. Although foreign views on the US are mixed, fans are enjoying American foods. To seize the interest, ranch dressing brands plan to distribute seasoning packets at the event and have started exploring overseas markets. Hidden Valley also encouraged travelers to take home dry ranch packets instead.
