Record Male Great White Shark Spotted Near Popular Resort

The largest male white shark was seen near North Carolina. The shark is 14 feet long and is called “Contender.” A GPS device on Contender sent an alert last Thursday evening. This device helps track the shark when it is out of the water.

It was not possible to find Contender’s exact location this time. But a spokesperson for OCEARCH said the shark is likely moving up the East Coast. This is part of the sharks’ summer migration. They usually swim north and feed in Cape Cod or Atlantic Canada during summer and early fall.

The waters in this region are comfortable. There are also grey seals and large fish for the sharks to eat. Contender weighs nearly 1,700 pounds.

Contender was tagged in January last year off Florida and Georgia. Since then, he has traveled over 7,000 miles in the Atlantic Ocean. The tag on Contender will provide data about his movements for five years. He was named after a boat company that works with OCEARCH.
