The term “sport utility vehicle” or SUV covers a wide range of vehicles, from small crossovers to large truck-based models. The SUV market mainly divides into two types: unibody crossovers and body-on-frame SUVs. Unibody SUVs, such as the Toyota RAV4, are popular for their comfort and fuel efficiency. In contrast, body-on-frame models excel in off-road driving and towing.
Many buyers prefer unibody crossovers, but there is still demand for traditional body-on-frame SUVs. As a result, several car manufacturers are reintroducing classic models or launching new ones. Toyota, for example, has announced the Land Cruiser FJ, a smaller and cheaper SUV aimed at American off-road fans. While it may not be sold in the US, it shows the brand’s commitment to retro styles.
Hyundai is also entering this market with a new body-on-frame platform, showcasing the Boulder SUV concept. This vehicle aims to compete with famous 4x4s like the Ford Bronco and Jeep Wrangler and is expected by 2030.
General Motors is reportedly working on the GMC Jimmy, aiming to have a rugged SUV to rival the Ford Bronco and Jeep Wrangler. Meanwhile, Nissan is developing new body-on-frame SUVs, including the revived Xterra, expected to launch in late 2028. Mitsubishi plans to introduce an updated Pajero by fall 2026, further expanding the body-on-frame SUV market.
