Singer David Archuleta, who was a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for most of his life, faced inner turmoil over his sexuality that almost led him to self-harm. His struggles with the church’s teachings on marriage and family led him to a dark place, but ultimately he found the courage to come out as queer in 2021 and leave the church in 2022. This decision led to tension with his family, but he found unexpected support from his mother, who also left the church to stand by him.
Now, Archuleta is focused on his music career, writing a memoir, and living authentically. His journey reflects a larger issue facing the church as it grapples with LGBTQ issues, especially among its growing Latino membership. While the church’s teachings remain unchanged, many LGBTQ individuals are finding the courage to live authentically and seek support outside the church community.
Despite the challenges he faced, Archuleta is now embracing his true self and finding happiness outside the confines of the church. He hopes to continue his music career and connect with the LGBTQ community through his work. His story is a testament to the power of self-acceptance and living authentically.
