The late French actor Alain Delon’s request for his pet dog to be euthanized and buried alongside him has been declined by his children following protests from animal rights activists.
Delon, who passed away at the age of 88 over the weekend, had expressed his desire for his 10-year-old Belgian malinois named Loubo to be “put to sleep” and interred in his grave at the cemetery on his property in Douchy, Loiret.
On Tuesday, in response to the uproar from campaigners, it was revealed that Loubo would not be euthanized but instead would remain with the family. Delon’s daughter Anouchka confirmed this decision, stating that the dog is considered a part of the family.
Earlier in the day, there was some confusion when the Brigitte Bardot Foundation initially announced on social media that Loubo would be spared, only to later delete the posts.
Various animal organizations, including the SPA in France, had expressed concern over Delon’s wish for his dog, emphasizing that an animal’s life should not be dependent on a human’s. They offered to rehome the dog and provide a loving family for Loubo.
Delon had a special bond with his canine companion, whom he adopted in 2014 from a shelter. This decision to keep Loubo alive instead of carrying out Delon’s final wish demonstrates the family’s compassion for their beloved pet.
