[Argentina is currently facing a shortage of insect repellent, bracing itself for its worst-ever dengue season. Dengue, a mosquito-borne virus potentially lethal in severe cases, is most prevalent in tropical and subtropical climates, with symptoms including high fever, severe headaches, swollen glands, and rashes. Argentinian citizens are finding it virtually impossible to buy repellant, and when available, the prices are significantly inflated. The government has attributed this to a supply “bottleneck” but assures the public that it will resolve the issue.
The shortage of repellents started to be noticed in March. A company that manufactures repellents in Argentina attributes the shortages to a forecasting error, explaining that the manufacturing process takes months. Meanwhile, the Argentinian health ministry reported 163,419 cases of dengue fever thus far in 2024, with fatalities recorded across all age groups, particularly among people over 80 years old.
Cases of Dengue in the Americas have tripled in 2024 compared to the same period last year, with Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay being the worst-hit nations – accounting for 98% of all cases and 87% of deaths. So far, regional health authorities have recorded over 3.5 million cases and a thousand deaths related to the virus. Factors such as global warming and El Nino are believed to be contributing to worsening conditions.
