Astro Forge
When I first conversed with space entrepreneurs Jose Acain and Matt Gialich over two years ago, I pondered whether our paths would cross again.
Engaging in asteroid mining, their venture, AstroForge, is a risky endeavor. While NASA has only brought back rocky material from asteroids, the Psyche mission, set for 2029, aims to change that. Despite the challenges, Acain and Gialich recently secured $40 million in Series A funding for AstroForge, paving the way for their upcoming missions.
Following the setback of the Brokkr-1 cubesat mission, AstroForge is gearing up for the launch of Odin, a spacecraft set to explore a metal-rich asteroid. Despite facing hurdles during testing, the team remains resilient, adapting their approach to ensure success.
The company also unveiled plans for Vestri, a larger spacecraft intended to dock with the targeted asteroid, marking a significant milestone in private space exploration.
AstroForge’s ambitions extend far beyond Earth, as they aim to unlock the potential of near-Earth asteroids rich in metals, paving the way for future extraterrestrial resource utilization.
