Big asteroid predicted to pass Earth harmlessly on Monday

The night skies will soon offer a unique spectacle as the large asteroid 2013 NK4 is set to dash past Earth, according to NASA. On 15th April 2024, this striking celestial body is expected to streak past Earth at a safe distance, more than eight times the moon’s range.

This asteroid, about 2,000 feet in diameter, is of special interest due to its considerable size which is almost twice as large as Apophis, another well-known asteroid. Unlike Apophis, which will come frighteningly close to our planet in 2029, 2013 NK4 will remain at a more comfortable distance, ensuring a remarkable but entirely safe spectacle.

The asteroid was first discovered in 2013 and it orbits the sun every 378 days. Its elliptical path takes it beyond Mars and swoops in between the orbits of Venus and Mercury. At its peak speed, the asteroid will zoom past Earth at an astounding 36,909 mph.

Amateur astronomers will have a rare opportunity to see this asteroid in action. Those with a small telescope will be able to witness this huge space rock traverse the vast cosmos from the comfort of their own backyards. The sight will be even more mesmerizing on the nights of April 16 and 17.

NASA is planning to learn more about this fascinating celestial body. Between April 13-19, astronomers will use the 230-foot DSS-14 Goldstone radar antenna in California for the study.

The upcoming celestial event is a gentle reminder of the boundless wonders the universe has to offer. Both professional and hobbyist astronomers are looking forward to this fascinating encounter with asteroid 2013 NK4. The event serves as a reminder of the intricate cosmic dance that occurs in the universe that we are still just beginning to understand.

Note: Keep your focus on the night sky on April 16 and 17 to ensure you don’t miss this extraordinary space spectacle.
