Half-Life 2 has recently celebrated its 20th anniversary, and in honor of this milestone, Valve has released an update for their iconic first-person shooter. The update includes several noteworthy features: developer commentary has been recorded, Steam Workshop support has been introduced, the Episodes One and Two expansions are now included, and a variety of bug fixes and new graphical options have been implemented.
If you seize the opportunity before the weekend concludes (November 18th at 6 PM GMT), you can claim it for free on Steam and keep it forever.
While Episodes One and Two already featured developer commentary, Half-Life 2 had not, until now. This update provides three and a half hours of insightful commentary from the original team, who reflect on the complexities and challenges faced during the game’s development.
The story of Half-Life 2’s creation is nothing short of fascinating. Valve even collaborated with Secret Tape to produce a two-hour documentary detailing this journey. You can catch it here:
Despite being late to the party, the addition of Steam Workshop support is a welcome development, especially for a game that once boasted a vibrant modding community. The Workshop is already buzzing with new content.
The comprehensive list of fixes and enhancements is extensive. Notable changes include improved support for ultrawide monitors, expanded spawn points in multiplayer maps, and increased flexibility for modders working with BSP files.
Following this trend, Valve made similar updates for Half-Life’s 25th anniversary last year. Looking ahead, I eagerly anticipate the 20th anniversary of Day Of Defeat: Source next year, along with the accompanying documentary.
