Elon Musk is suing OpenAI and Microsoft, claiming they have too much control in the AI market. OpenAI denies the accusations.
The lawsuit, filed in California, also names Reid Hoffman, co-founder of LinkedIn, as a defendant. Musk’s company, xAI, is said to be a victim of their monopoly.
OpenAI, founded in 2015 to create artificial general intelligence, changed its structure in 2019 to allow for more funding. Microsoft invested $1 billion initially, later forming a multi-billion dollar partnership.
Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, is accused of self-dealing in the lawsuit. Musk previously argued that OpenAI becoming like a subsidiary of Microsoft was not what he had agreed to.
The lawsuit follows Musk’s previous legal actions against OpenAI. This week, Musk was also chosen for a government role focusing on reducing government spending.
OpenAI responds that Musk’s claims are unfounded, saying he originally supported their for-profit structure.
The BBC has reached out to Reid Hoffman for comment.
