Dua Lipa, Elton John, Ian McKellen, and Florence Welch are famous stars asking the prime minister to change copyright laws. They want better protection from artificial intelligence (AI).
More than 400 British artists wrote a letter to Sir Keir Starmer. They say if copyright laws don’t change, tech companies will use their work without permission. They worry this could hurt the UK’s creative industry.
The artists want the prime minister to support a new rule in the Data (Use and Access) Bill. This rule would require developers to tell creators when they use their work to make AI.
A government spokesperson said they want both creators and AI companies to succeed. They are reviewing ideas to help both sides.
Other famous signers include Kazuo Ishiguro, David Hare, Kate Bush, and Robbie Williams. They believe that artists are important for stories and future projects.
Not everyone agrees with the artists. Some think this could slow growth in the UK. However, many artists are worried about AI using their work without asking. They want the government to act to protect their rights.
