Iconic Ferrari Dino GTS, Previously Possessed by Led Zeppelin’s Manager, up for Auction

This month, a distinguished 1973 Ferrari 246 Dino GTS – a celebrated piece of automotive elegance formerly belonging to Peter Grant, the manager of the iconic rock band, Led Zeppelin, is poised to appear in an upcoming auction. Aesthetically resplendent in ‘Rosso Bordeaux’ and sporting a luxurious brown leather interior, this esteemed car is imbued with historic resonance and a distinctive pedigree that could potentially entice avid collectors and enthusiasts worldwide.

With a modest mileage of 1,007 miles, this particular Dino GTS stands as a singular testament to automotive brilliance. This car is notably one of only 235 right-hand-drive cars sold in the United Kingdom during the ebullient car market of the early 1970s – precisely between the years 1972 and 1974. Amongst these, it is one of a mere 114 cars adorned in this tastefully refined colour combination.

For an approximate duration of three years, this captivating machine was enjoyed by Peter Grant before being sold to its next custodian. This Dino GTS — throughout its journey on the road — has been diligently and devotedly preserved, as evidenced by acquisition receipts for major restoration work. This includes the substantial overhaul of the delicate suspension, a rebuilt braking system and the incorporation of an advanced, high-torque starter motor. Furthermore, the radiator has been meticulously renovated with a new header tank added as part of the process.

Happily, amidst this attentive refurbishment, it retains the nostalgic charm of its era’s authenticity. This is exemplified through its original Cromodora alloy wheels, the analog instrumentation, and classically styled controls. The addition of a comprehensive history file, including documentation exchanged with the revered Ferrari factory situated in Maranello, Italy, and a first logbook rightly bearing Peter Grant’s name, add further authenticity and allure to this high-end model.

Managed by Car & Classic, the auction is set to commence on February 22, with the gavel expected to fall on February 29. The esteemed vehicle comes with a projected estimate, although only speculative, of £275,000 – £350,000.

With a mild nod to Led Zeppelin’s recognized fascination for supercars and, in particular, their fondness for Ferraris, Car & Classic’s head of editorial, Dale Vinten, captured the overall sentiment eloquently. He said, “This Dino, a previous possession of Peter Grant, is an adored and serviceable piece with a verifiable history that stands testament to automotive heritage.”

He further expounded: “Its significance transcends being a mere vehicle. Indeed, it has become a fragment of rock history, a remarkable piece of Led Zeppelin memorabilia and a beautifully preserved and coveted example of a 246 Dino GTS. Hopefully, it will be universally acknowledged and appreciated for its substantial historical importance, and ultimately find a suitable new home.”
