Important Updates on Fitbit’s Demise: What You Must Understand

Share

The demise of Fitbit’s smartwatches was inevitable once Google introduced its first Pixel Watch in October 2022. It was evident that Google needed a direct competitor to the Apple Watch and saw Fitbit technology as the means to achieve that goal. Despite Fitbit continuing to produce top-notch smartwatches alongside the Pixel, it appears that era has come to an end.

Reports from TechRadar suggest that Google has officially halted production of the Fitbit Sense and Versa smartwatches. Moving forward, Fitbit’s lineup will focus solely on fitness trackers like the Fitbit Charge and Fitbit Inspire. Any future developments in smartwatch technology, watch faces, or wellness features will likely be reserved for Pixel Watch devices exclusively.

As a longtime Fitbit user dating back to the first Fitbit Flex, I can’t help but feel disappointed by this news, although not entirely surprised. For many consumers outside the tech sphere, Fitbit has been their go-to wearable choice. The Fitbit Sense 2, praised for its advanced wellness sensors and insights, was highly regarded among users.

The big question now is what Google plans to do for existing users of Fitbit smartwatches like the Sense 2 and Versa 4. While the company has requested users to transition to a Google account, it assures support for Fitbit accounts until 2025. However, the longevity of product support remains uncertain.

Google’s decision to deactivate certain features post-purchase, such as Wi-Fi support and audio playback, raises concerns for current Fitbit owners. With the introduction of the Pixel Watch 3 offering free access to premium Fitbit features, the future of Fitbit as a brand seems uncertain.

While the fate of Fitbit’s activity trackers remains unclear, there is speculation about a potential “Pixel Tracker” to complement the Pixel Watch or the continuation of the Fitbit brand to compete with other fitness tracker giants. Regardless, it seems that Fitbit’s dominance in the wearable market may be diminishing, paving the way for Google’s Pixel ecosystem to take center stage.
