Trump has imposed unjustified tariffs on Canada – Mark Carney

Former Governor of the Bank of England, Mark Carney, emerged victorious in the contest to succeed Justin Trudeau as Canada’s Prime Minister and leader of the Liberal Party.

At 59, Carney triumphed over three competitors and is set to lead the Liberals into the upcoming general election, which is anticipated to be announced shortly.

In his acceptance speech, Carney strongly criticized US President Donald Trump for instigating a trade dispute with Canada and expressing intentions to annex the country as the 51st US state.

Assuming office during a period of significant uncertainty for Canada, Carney, a political novice, faces the challenge of elevating the Liberals’ standing against the Conservatives, especially post the onset of the trade conflict with Trump.

The leadership race commenced in January consequent to Trudeau’s resignation after a decade in power, prompted by dwindling popularity.

Securing victory on the initial ballot, Carney garnered a resounding 85.9% of the votes, surpassing his closest contender, former Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland.

Upon being named the winner on Sunday evening, Carney emphasized the necessity for unified leadership to combat division and strengthen the nation.

Accusing Trump of imposing “unjustified tariffs” on Canada, Carney vowed to maintain these duties on American imports until accorded due respect from the US.

Federal Public Safety Minister David McGuinty, a Carney supporter, commended his astute aptitude to address pressing national issues.

Carney, advocating a centrist policy agenda, differs from Trudeau’s leftward shift during his tenure.

Pledging to promote key energy projects and enhance trade diversification away from the US, Carney envisions a revitalized Canadian economy.
