Massachusetts Takes Over St. Elizabeth’s and 4 Other Hospitals

Share

Governor Maura Healey made a significant announcement on Friday regarding the state’s intervention in St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center in Brighton. She declared that the state would exercise eminent domain to take control of the hospital, along with securing deals to prevent the closure of four other Steward Health Care hospitals across Massachusetts.

In a press conference, Healey emphasized the importance of safeguarding access to healthcare in these communities and preserving the jobs of the dedicated hospital staff. The agreements in principle have been made to transfer ownership of Saint Anne’s Hospital, Good Samaritan Medical Center, Morton Hospital, and Holy Family hospitals to new entities. However, negotiations for St. Elizabeth’s have hit a roadblock as private equity firms overseeing Steward’s bankruptcy proceedings are not prioritizing the interests of Massachusetts residents.

Healey asserted the state’s determination to seize control of St. Elizabeth’s through eminent domain to facilitate a smooth transition under new ownership. The plans involve Lawrence General Hospital taking over the Holy Family hospitals, Lifespan assuming control of Morton and Saint Anne’s, and Boston Medical Center managing Good Samaritan and St. Elizabeth’s following the eminent domain process.

Despite Steward’s silence on the state’s actions, Healey outlined a financing plan in collaboration with lawmakers to ensure a seamless transition of hospital ownership. The move has been hailed as a victory for Massachusetts, shedding light on alleged profit-driven practices within Steward’s management.

While this initiative secures the future of five hospitals, the closures of Carney Hospital and Nashoba Valley Medical Center remain imminent. Efforts are being made to support affected employees and patients during this transition period, with a keen focus on securing qualified bidders to maximize positive outcomes for these healthcare facilities.
