Newsom Approves Instant Rebates for Electric Vehicle Buyers

California has introduced a new electric vehicle (EV) rebate program. Governor Gavin Newsom signed a bill called SB 168 on Monday. This program aims to help families buying their first electric cars save money directly at the dealership.

The state will provide $135.5 million for the program. Automakers must match this amount. First-time buyers can receive an instant rebate of $3,500 for new EVs priced up to $50,000. For used EVs that sell for less than $25,000, buyers can get a rebate of $1,750.

The governor’s office stated that this program will help families afford cleaner vehicles. It will also allow them to save money. Currently, sales of electric vehicles have dropped because the federal government removed tax credits for EVs.

This bill shows the ongoing disagreement between Governor Newsom and President Trump. The removal of the federal tax credit happened because of a major tax law passed by Congress and signed by Trump. The new rebate program is expected to start later this summer after California reveals which automakers will take part.
