Selena Gomez Stars in Groundbreaking Musical About Trans Drug Lord

From the very start of Emilia Pérez, directed by Jacques Audiard, it’s evident that this film is a musical, albeit not in a conventional sense. No daydreaming characters in glamorous rehearsals here; instead, the music feels as if it arises organically from the environments surrounding the characters. For instance, a sweeping aerial shot of Mexico City at night introduces an unsettling harmony, blending the voices of street vendors calling out for used appliances. Later, the rhythmic sound of tires on asphalt transforms into a character’s urgent yearning for acknowledgment. This essence encapsulates what one might expect from a traditional “I want” song.

Audiard originally conceived Emilia Pérez as an opera, reflecting its grand and theatrical nature. The film prominently features three powerful female leads, each delivering captivating solos that explore a spectrum of emotions such as anger, longing, and desire. Spanning over two hours, the narrative traverses five years across diverse continents, intertwining elements of crime, familial drama, and profound self-discovery, while addressing themes ranging from redemption to tragic hubris—often found in both film noir and melodrama.

Though Emilia Pérez isn’t exclusively targeted at female viewers, it delves deeply into the female experience. Some characters perceive womanhood as a constraint, while others view it as a realm for personal reinvention. Karla Sofía Gascón shines as the transgender protagonist, delivering a remarkable performance that captures her character’s contradictions, rendering her simultaneously admirable and flawed. Gascón’s magnetic presence does not overshadow the talented supporting cast, including Zoe Saldaña, who showcases her skills as a singer and dancer, and Selena Gomez, who adds depth to her character through humor and vulnerability.
