Sony Unveils ‘Game Changers’: Celebrating Accessibility in Gaming

Share

On Tuesday, Sony posted a video on YouTube that offers a retrospective look at one year with the Access Controller for PlayStation 5. Titled Game Changers, this nearly 22-minute video serves as a mini-documentary, highlighting the experiences of disabled gamers and accessibility advocates Jared Grier and Alejandro Courtney.

Grier, a rehabilitation engineer affiliated with the nonprofit AbleGamers, collaborates closely with those advocating for disability rights. Meanwhile, Courtney is a professional gamer with the Quad Gods team, which aims to highlight gamers with disabilities as credible esports competitors.

The release of Game Changers coincides with the anniversary of Sony’s launch announcement for the Access Controller. This device, described as a “highly customizable accessibility controller kit,” aims to allow disabled individuals to “play more comfortably and for longer.” The Access Controller, previously known as “Project Leonardo,” was introduced last year at CES, with pre-orders starting in July.

In essence, the Access Controller provides a comparable solution to Microsoft’s Xbox Adaptive Controller. Priced at $90, it is slightly more affordable than its Microsoft counterpart, which retails for $99. Both controllers come in accessible packaging, further emphasizing the importance of inclusivity in gaming.
