A newly opened speakeasy in Mexico City’s trendy Colonia Juarez has been declared the world’s best bar. Handshake Speakeasy earned this prestigious accolade at a glittering awards ceremony held last night in Madrid by the World’s 50 Best association.
This recognition marks a significant milestone for a venue that only unveiled its downstairs setting in 2023, having previously secured a third-place position on last year’s list.
Following closely behind in the second position is Hong Kong’s Bar Leone, an Italian-style establishment that champions the concept of “cocktail populari” or “cocktail for the people.” Last year’s champion, Barcelona’s Sips, slides to third place despite its star-studded background, attributed to its owners’ impressive experiences in renowned establishments like El Bulli and Artesian.
The awards not only spotlight new contenders; they also highlight established bars that continue to impress. For instance, Singapore’s Jigger & Pony, a mainstay on the 50 Best list since 2012, survived the pandemic and remains a top choice.
With some of this year’s top venues nestled in hotels, travelers have convenient access to outstanding cocktail experiences. For example, London boasts four of the top bars, allowing enthusiasts to indulge in the city’s vibrant cocktail culture.
This year, the prestigious “bartender’s bartender” award went to Iain McPherson from Edinburgh’s Panda & Sons, who has garnered respect for his innovative and humorous approach to mixology.
