Scientists in Chile have unearthed megaraptors and feathered dinosaur fossils, challenging the terrifying depiction of Velociraptors in “Jurassic Park.” Contrary to the large, aggressive predators in the movies, real Velociraptors were relatively small, similar in size to wolves, and covered in non-threatening feathers. However, a recent discovery by a team of paleontologists suggests a close relative to the Velociraptor, known as a megaraptor, may have existed, with estimated sizes closer to those in the films.
These findings come from fossilized footprints found in China, believed to belong to one of the largest raptors ever discovered. While much larger than the raptors in “Jurassic Park,” this megaraptor is described as slimmer and more intelligent than its fictional counterpart. The footprints, with a unique shape featuring two toes, were identified as belonging to a new species named Fujianipus yingliangi, estimated to be nearly six feet tall and 15 feet long.
Further research into the megaraptor’s bones could provide more insight into its appearance and behavior. The discovery sheds light on the diversity and adaptability of raptor dinosaurs, showcasing the incredible size range within the species. The study, published in the journal iScience, offers valuable information on prehistoric wildlife and scientific advancements in paleontology.
