By Tuesday morning, a long-time Oracle employee began to worry when he could not access the company’s VPN. His concern grew when Slack stopped working, and he checked his email. He found a message informing him, along with many others, that his job was no longer needed.
The employee shared that the message felt dismissive and unprofessional. He wished to remain anonymous as he feared discussing his job loss could impact any benefits he might receive.
Oracle has not confirmed how many employees were laid off. The company refused to provide details on Tuesday and Wednesday. The worker believes artificial intelligence (AI) led to his job loss. He noted that AI could take jobs, but those changes mostly affect large companies that can integrate it into their operations.
In Washington, Oracle cut at least 491 jobs, and in Missouri, 539 workers were let go. These layoffs indicate a restructuring plan aiming to save costs, with budget estimates rising significantly over time.
Notably, some reports suggest that around 10,000 jobs were lost overnight across the company. The long-time Oracle worker expressed disappointment but remained pragmatic about the layoffs, stating he was in the later stages of his career and had fewer responsibilities.
