In the popular medical drama “The Pitt,” one of the most significant plotlines in its second season reflects a common issue in real hospitals. According to ER doctor J Mack Slaughter, the shutdown of electronic medical records is not uncommon and can elicit strong reactions from healthcare professionals watching the show.
This season has featured several instances where electronic records became inaccessible, particularly due to concerns about hacking. However, Slaughter revealed that such shutdowns can occur routinely, lasting from 20 minutes to three hours. This situation is seen as a typical part of hospital operations and can create chaos, especially during busy times when emergency departments are filled with patients needing urgent care.
Slaughter recounted his own experiences during a hectic night shift where, for three hours, the electronic medical record system failed. He described it as “an absolute nightmare,” emphasising how disruptive it is to healthcare. Sometimes, these outages happen for routine maintenance, which also hinders patient care.
The lack of electronic records not only stalls workflows but complicates basic functions. Staff are reliant on digital systems for critical safety checks, patient histories, and medication interactions. Slaughter suggested that a solution is needed to reduce the frequency or eliminate these outages, calling it “a really big problem.” He expressed hope that in the future, such issues will seem outdated.
For now, there seems to be no immediate resolution in sight, but the hope remains that season three of “The Pitt” may depict a reduction in these disruptions.
