Researchers have discovered a new species of box jellyfish in the coastal waters near Sentosa Island, Singapore. This finding is important because it reveals the existence of more types of these dangerous jellyfish than scientists previously knew. The new species is named Chironex blakangmati, after the island’s old Malay name, which means “Island of Death Behind.”
The jellyfish belongs to the Chironexgenus, which includes jellyfish that have powerful stings. These stings can be fatal to humans within minutes. Initially, C. blakangmati looked very similar to another species, Chironex yamaguchii, found in Okinawa. For many years, scientists thought they were the same animal.
Cheryl Ames, the lead researcher, explained that they only realised the jellyfish were different after doing thorough studies. She even checked an old sample of C. yamaguchii that she had stored in Okinawa. Strong scientific methods, like genetic analysis and detailed examinations, confirmed that C. blakangmati has a unique feature. It lacks pointed canals at the tips of its perradial lappets, which are structures that help the jellyfish move.
This important discovery adds to our understanding of marine life and highlights the need for more research into these creatures.
