American Airlines reveals expansion plans for DFW Terminal C

American Airlines, alongside DFW International Airport, inaugurated an extension of Terminal C on Monday, significantly enhancing operations at the airline’s largest hub in Fort Worth. This development marks a crucial step in modernising the airport’s facilities to improve passenger experiences.

The expansion, which spans 115,000 square feet, introduces five renovated gates and four new ones. Jim Moses, the senior vice president of hub operations at DFW Airport for American, noted that two of the new gates, C33 and C34, commenced operations months prior to the official opening. This early access allowed staff to acclimatise to the updated environment and become familiar with advanced technology and operational changes.

The remaining gates in the extension will soon be integrated into flight schedules, according to American Airlines. The newly designed pier incorporates innovative features, including sustainable windows that adjust according to sunlight, various seating arrangements, and in-seat power for passengers. Ceiling lighting highlights where boarding and seating areas are located. Furthermore, the terminal showcases American’s electronic boarding gates, currently being tested in Terminal A.

Moses explained that this upgrade provides a glimpse into the future of Terminal C, featuring modern lighting, contemporary seating, and an emphasis on customer experience. The new expansion facilitates changes to older gates as part of ongoing improvements. American Airlines commands over 80% of the market share at DFW Airport, operating around 200 daily departures from Terminal C alone.

The expansion allowed the airport to implement modular construction, wherein sections of the pier were constructed off-site and transported to the airport, expediting the project’s timeline by roughly 7.5 months. The Terminal C extension represents the initial phase of a broader terminal overhaul, part of a $12 billion improvement initiative. This includes enhancements to Terminal A and the construction of Terminal F, the first new terminal at DFW Airport in over two decades, ultimately adding or refurbishing 68 gates.
