Melon season has arrived, marking a delightful period of summer characterised by the availability of refreshing fruits like watermelon, cantaloupe, and honeydew. This time of year brings enjoyment as people seek cold, juicy melons to combat the heat.
Many relish the prospect of mixing ripe cantaloupe with berries and pineapple for a refreshing fruit salad, enhanced with lime juice, honey, and mint. Alternatively, one might follow the European tradition of pairing cantaloupe with aged ham, creating a delightful sweet-and-savoury experience.
Despite the usual bliss associated with melons, recent findings highlight important food safety considerations. It is crucial to wash cantaloupe thoroughly before cutting. The risk stems from the melon’s hard rind, which can harbour harmful bacteria.
Food safety attorney Bill Marler has focused on the dangers of cantaloupe for several years. In 2023, a significant outbreak occurred in the United States and Canada, leading to nearly 600 illnesses and eight fatalities. According to Marler, unlike most fruits, bacteria can thrive on a cantaloupe’s surface, posing a potential health risk from the point of harvest to purchase.
The risk becomes apparent when cutting a cantaloupe without proper washing. A knife that encounters bacteria on the surface can inadvertently transfer those germs into the flesh of the fruit, a significant concern given that cantaloupe is typically consumed raw.
The California Cantaloupe Advisory Board and the USDA recommend using a vegetable brush to wash melons under running water before slicing. This measure ensures a thorough cleaning to reduce cross-contamination. Additionally, it is advisable to sanitise knives and cutting boards after use, as one would with raw chicken to mitigate salmonella risks.
While one might refrain from washing pre-cut cantaloupe due to uncertainties regarding proper washing in production, the likelihood of contracting salmonella remains statistically low. Therefore, washing your cantaloupe carefully allows you to safely enjoy its refreshing taste this season.
