Vincent Pastore, best known for portraying Tony Soprano’s confidant-turned-informant in HBO’s acclaimed series “The Sopranos,” has passed away at the age of 80. His manager confirmed that he died at home in the Bronx, New York, with friends reporting the discovery of his body on Saturday.
The New York Police Department responded to a 911 call at around 2:30 p.m., discovering an unconscious, unresponsive man. Medical personnel pronounced Pastore dead at the scene, and according to police, no criminal activity was involved. The Chief Medical Examiner’s Office is set to determine the cause of death, while an investigation continues.
Pastore gained fame in 1999 when he was cast as Salvatore Bonpensiero, affectionately known as ‘Big Pussy’, in “The Sopranos.” This character, a close ally of mob boss Tony Soprano, ultimately becomes an FBI informant, jeopardising the New Jersey mob’s operations. Born and raised in the Bronx, Pastore served in the Navy and attended Pace University before building a formidable career, appearing in various mob-related productions, both on stage and in film.
He was also involved in music, performing with the band Gangster Squad, which played at venues across New York and New Jersey. Despite a brief stint on “Dancing With the Stars,” which he described as challenging, Pastore founded the Renegade Theater NYC, showcasing his writing and acting talents.
Pastore’s colleagues and friends have paid tribute to him. Steven Van Zandt, a fellow cast member, noted the profound loss, while Michael Imperioli expressed fond memories of their time together. Lorraine Bracco, who portrayed Dr. Melfi in the series, described him as possessing a “beautiful soul.” Moving forward, his legacy as a cherished actor and friend is set to be remembered by those who admired his work and generosity.
