Damage to three Amazon Web Services (AWS) facilities in the Middle East has raised concerns about the safety of data centers in conflict areas. The damage came from Iranian drone strikes, which directly hit two centers in the United Arab Emirates and affected another facility in Bahrain.
AWS reported that these strikes caused structural damage and interruptedpower to their systems. Some fire suppression actions also led to water damage. Recovery efforts at the UAE centers are progressing, according to AWS. However, unlike past events that caused global outages due to software issues, these drone attacks only caused limited disruptions locally.
AWS provides cloud computing services that many governments and businesses rely on. To avoid problems, the company has advised customers in the Middle East to move their data to other regions.
An IT professor, Mike Chapple, explained that AWS usually designs its services so losing one data center is not a big issue. Other centers in the same zone can take over tasks to keep services running. However, losing multiple centers could lead to serious problems if there is not enough capacity to manage all the work.
AWS does not share the exact number of data centers it operates globally. Each region has several centers to ensure better security and service.
