American Airlines is set to open a new grab-and-go lounge at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport by the end of this year. This facility will be the airline’s first new addition at the airport in over four years, as it seeks to attract more high-paying customers and close the profit gap with rivals Delta Air Lines and United Airlines.
The new lounge will cover 3,700 square feet and feature a barista bar offering hot and iced coffee, as well as a selection of hot and cold food items for travellers to take with them. In recent years, airlines have increasingly introduced these short-visit lounges to provide access for credit card holders and affluent customers, reducing congestion in larger airport clubs. United Airlines opened its first similar lounge at Denver International Airport in late 2022.
To manage capacity, airlines and credit card companies have tightened entry requirements and limited perks such as guest passes. American Airlines launched its first grab-and-go lounge, known as Provisions, at Charlotte Douglas International Airport in North Carolina last year.
At JFK, American operates from Terminal 8, which it shares with partners in the Oneworld Alliance, including Japan Airlines and British Airways. The airline has a number of high-end lounges for business and first-class travellers, which it expanded in 2022. However, American has not updated its New York facilities as much as those in other cities like Chicago and Austin.
