Paramount/CBS recently issued takedown notices to YouTube users uploading unauthorised copies of Stephen Colbert’s episode of “Only in Monroe.” The show is copyrighted and has been officially released on Colbert’s new YouTube channel.
In response to public outcry, CBS has decided to halt further takedown actions for the time being. A CBS spokesperson confirmed that the episode was produced by CBS Studios and is available on Colbert’s channel in collaboration with Monroe Community Media.
Colbert launched his YouTube channel just a day ago, featuring only the episode from “Only in Monroe.” However, other users had already uploaded the same content, with one channel, “The Desk,” surpassing 620,000 views, while Colbert’s version has around 392,000 views.
This situation illustrates a routine copyright process, similar to what would occur if someone posted an episode of “Matlock.” Monroe Community Media has not pursued takedowns due to limited legal resources, but the official video is readily accessible on Colbert’s channel and has also been shared by other official platforms for easy viewing.
Insiders revealed that Paramount/CBS is not attempting to silence Colbert’s return to “Only in Monroe,” as the company funded the episode’s production, which features music by Jack White and a guest appearance from Jeff Daniels. This investment led to “The Late Show” holding the copyright.
Colbert first appeared on “Only in Monroe” in July 2015 when he launched “The Late Show,” making his recent return particularly significant. The episode also featured guest appearances from notable figures, further adding to its appeal.
