CDC Reports Possible Presence of Bird Flu Virus in a Small Number of Wastewater Sites

There is no concrete evidence of bird flu spreading among people, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Despite an outbreak of the virus in dairy cows, the CDC stated on Tuesday that transmission to humans has not been confirmed.

Recent data from 189 wastewater sampling sites revealed higher-than-average levels of an influenza A virus in some locations across the United States, including Alaska, California, Florida, Illinois, and Kansas. The specific strain circulating in cows, known as H5N1, is a type of influenza A.

Notably, one site in Saline County, Kansas, showed unusually high levels of the flu virus, with four herds testing positive in April. However, it remains unclear if the virus detected in wastewater samples indicates infections in humans, cows, birds, or other animals.

Dr. Cameron Wolfe, an infectious disease expert at Duke University School of Medicine, found the recent CDC data reassuring, stating there has not been a significant increase in flu-like illnesses in his practice. So far, only one person, a dairy farm worker in Texas, has been diagnosed with bird flu connected to the dairy cow outbreak.

The CDC is closely monitoring 260 individuals exposed to infected dairy cows for flu-like symptoms, with 33 people tested for the virus. The infected individual developed conjunctivitis, or pinkeye, but has since recovered.
