The Metropolitan Police has announced that they will be looking into the possibility of pursuing criminal charges against other individuals in connection with abuse allegations against the late former Harrods owner, Mohamed Al Fayed. They are urging anyone who has not yet come forward with allegations to do so, and are also reviewing historical complaints. The force has identified 19 allegations involving Al Fayed that were reported to them between 2005 and 2023, with offenses allegedly occurring between 1979 and 2013.
Despite the fact that Al Fayed passed away at the age of 94 in 2023, the Met stated that they are conducting full reviews of all existing allegations to ensure no new leads are left unexplored. They have reached out to the Crown Prosecution Service multiple times over the years, however, no further action was taken on any of the allegations. Commander Stephen Clayman emphasized the importance of giving victims a voice and ensuring that any allegations are taken seriously.
In light of recent testimonies from more than 20 former Harrods employees, including allegations of sexual assault and rape, the Met is focusing on possible criminal liability of other individuals involved. Harrods’s current managing director acknowledged past failures in addressing the toxic work culture under Al Fayed’s tenure and expressed deep regret for not responding to rumors of misconduct earlier.
In an effort to provide justice and support to victims, Harrods has initiated a settlement process for those affected by the abuse. The company emphasizes that the current leadership has implemented significant changes to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future. The recent BBC documentary and podcast further shed light on the abusive environment at Harrods during Al Fayed’s ownership, highlighting a pattern of exploitation and negligence within the organization.
