Jays Demonstrate Episodic-like Memory: The Intelligence of Bird Brains

Eurasian Jays Surprise Scientists with Human-like Memory Skills

A recent study has revealed that Eurasian jays possess a type of memory known as episodic-like memory, previously believed to be unique to humans. These birds were able to remember specific details of past events, such as the visual characteristics of cups used in a food-hiding experiment.

The findings suggest that episodic memory may not be exclusive to humans and could play a crucial role in helping jays locate stored food. Similar to “mental time travel” in humans, episodic-like memory enables jays to consciously recall past experiences and remember seemingly inconsequential details.

In the study conducted by James Davies from the University of Cambridge, seven Eurasian jays participated in a memory experiment. The birds demonstrated an impressive ability to remember the visual characteristics of cups even after a change in location and a time delay.

These results highlight the remarkable memory capabilities of Eurasian jays and raise intriguing questions about the nature of memory in non-human animals. The researchers hope to further explore how jays utilize episodic-like memory in various scenarios beyond finding food stores.
