The cause of death for former Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Gossip Girl star Michelle Trachtenberg has been established.
According to a statement from the New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner, laboratory test results revealed that Trachtenberg died from natural causes related to complications stemming from diabetes mellitus.
Tragically, she was found unresponsive in her Midtown Manhattan apartment on February 26, with paramedics pronouncing her dead at the scene. Authorities did not suspect foul play, and she was only 39 years old.
Initially, the coroner’s office stated that her cause of death would remain undetermined, as her family had declined an autopsy due to religious beliefs. However, if foul play had been suspected, an autopsy would have been mandated. Once the lab test results were received, the medical examiner’s office updated the cause of death accordingly.
Trachtenberg’s career began at the tender age of 3, starting in commercials, before she secured a recurring role as Lily Montgomery on the soap opera All My Children. She garnered wider recognition for her role in Nickelodeon’s The Adventures of Pete & Pete and earned a Daytime Emmy nomination for her performance in the Discovery series Truth or Scare. Her breakthrough came with the 1996 film Harriet the Spy.
Trachtenberg joined Buffy the Vampire Slayer in 2000 as Dawn Summers, Buffy’s younger sister. Her other notable roles included appearances in EuroTrip and Gossip Girl, where she portrayed the unpredictable Georgina Sparks. Her recent television appearances included guest spots on House and NCIS: Los Angeles, and she reprised her role in Max’s Gossip Girl sequel in 2023.
