The Saline Township campus in Michigan, about 50 miles from Detroit, is set to be a significant data center. It will have a capacity of over 1 gigawatt, far more than the typical data centers, which usually range from 100 to 300 megawatts. The developer, Related Digital, has secured $16 billion to build the centre, with assistance from investment firms Blackstone and PIMCO. This project will cover 250 acres, making it one of the largest data centres in the United States. Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer called it the “largest investment in Michigan history.”
The Saline data center will support Oracle’s AI operations, which are expected to generate about $90 billion in revenue by 2027. This project is part of a larger initiative called the Stargate project, valued at $500 billion, aimed at enhancing AI infrastructure in the US.
However, local residents are concerned about the impact of the data center. Protesters in Saline expressed worries regarding its effects on the electric grid and potential pollution in the area. One resident, Tammie Bruneau, stated she would prefer if the project did not take place.
While companies like OpenAI claim new data centers will revive the US economy and create jobs, locals fear they may harm their quality of life. In response to these concerns, tech leaders promised to bear more energy costs and mentioned using a closed-loop cooling system to protect local water sources, yet many residents still have doubts.
