Quinta Brunson is set to star in a new film about the animated character Betty Boop. The two-time Emmy winner’s production company, Fifth Chance Productions, will work with Mark Fleischer, the grandson of cartoonist Max Fleischer, to create the movie. This project was confirmed by The Times on Wednesday.
In a news release, Brunson described Betty Boop as one of the “most beloved cartoon characters” in America. She said there is a deeper story to tell about Betty and her origins. The film will explore how Betty Boop was created and how she has changed over time. It will look at the connection between the artist Max Fleischer and his famous character, focusing on the challenges he faced in the animation industry.
Betty Boop first appeared in 1930 in the cartoon “Dizzy Dishes.” She was designed by Myron (Grim) Natwick, who originally created her as a dog character. Natwick later changed her design, removing the dog’s ears and making her a more fashionable flapper with big eyes.
In 1932, Helen Kane sued Fleischer Studios, claiming Betty Boop copied her voice and style. However, the judge ruled against Kane. Betty Boop became famous for her charm and has remained a cultural icon over the decades. Brunson, well-known for her role in “Abbott Elementary,” continues to receive acclaim as she takes on this new challenge.
