UK Vows to Clear Driving Test Backlog by Next Summer

Share

The UK government aims to reduce the long waiting times for driving tests. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander plans to add 10,000 extra tests per month to tackle the issue. Long waits, currently up to six months in some areas, are deemed “unacceptable”.

Alexander also wants to double training capacity for examiners, asking qualified staff to return to the frontline temporarily. Overtime pay will be reinstated to speed up test deliveries. The goal is to reduce wait times to a maximum of 7 weeks by the summer of 2026.

To combat test booking bots that exploit learners by reselling slots at inflated prices, the government will introduce measures. Emma Bush from AA Driving School praised the plan to decrease waiting times and emphasized the importance of quick test access for job and education purposes.

With a record 1.95 million tests booked last year, consultation on improving the booking system will take place. The crackdown on bots is part of a larger effort to streamline the process for aspiring drivers.
