The five iconic members of “The Breakfast Club” convened this past Saturday, commemorating four decades since the mischievous denizens of Shermer High School first crossed paths in the confines of detention.
Molly Ringwald, Emilio Estevez, Judd Nelson, Ally Sheedy, and Anthony Michael Hall assembled for an engaging panel discussion at the Chicago-based pop culture convention, C2E2. The event, which was covered by People, provided a delightful opportunity for fans to delve into the legacy of John Hughes’ 1985 cinematic classic. The conversation was artfully moderated by entertainment journalist Josh Horowitz.
“I find myself profoundly moved by this reuniting,” expressed Ringwald, who notably portrayed the quintessential ‘it-girl’ Claire Standish in the film. With a touch of humor, she remarked on Estevez’s physical presence, saying, “We no longer require the cardboard cutout. It genuinely touches me that we are all together.”
Estevez, with a playful retort, remarked, “I felt it was imperative for me to be here in person,” underscoring the uniqueness of the reunion, particularly since C2E2 is hosted in Chicago, the very city where “The Breakfast Club” was filmed.
As the discussion progressed, Hall and Ringwald reflected on their auditioning experiences for their respective roles, particularly given their prior collaboration with Hughes in the 1984 film “Sixteen Candles.”
“John simply contacted me and said, ‘I want you to come in.’ There was no script provided,” Hall remarked.
“Initially, [Hughes] intended to produce ‘The Breakfast Club’ prior to ‘Sixteen Candles,’” Ringwald shared regarding her experience. “However, upon completing ‘Sixteen Candles’ and presenting it to the studio, they opted to pursue that project first.”
Sheedy, who portrayed the enigmatic Allison Reynolds, then elaborated on the profound camaraderie the cast developed throughout the film’s production.
“During the filmmaking process, I was elated; it’s quite apparent that we share a genuine affection for one another. Creating this film was a veritable dream—a truly joyous experience,” Sheedy articulated.
