The Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) was undoubtedly a groundbreaking console, which four decades later, still manages to capture the hearts of gaming enthusiasts with its nostalgic charm. Now, it’s enjoying a second life in an unexpected manner – hosting innovative, aftermarket games that are impressively polished and engaging.
One of these games, a 2019 release called ‘Micro Mages’ has earned considerable praise. Developed by Morphcat Games, the software company’s developers, Julius Riecke and Nicolas Bétoux, devoted tireless effort to ensure the game matched the size of only 40 kilobytes, akin to the classic Super Mario Bros. title on NES. The challenge was vital in fostering their coding skills and pushing the console’s capabilities beyond what was thought possible.
NES’ contemporary DIY scene has also been significantly driven by NESmaker, a useful software tool introduced in 2018 which simplifies the process of creating games for the console. It has paved a smoother path for developers like Riecke and Bétoux, invariably inspiring other creators to rekindle their love for the legendary 8-bit system by crafting unique games from scratch.
Interestingly, modern perceptions of ‘Micro Mages’ suggest it would have been a tremendous hit had it been released during NES’s peak era. Now, it serves as a testament to the console’s timeless appeal, with the game working seamlessly on original NES hardware. But what’s especially remarkable is how retro the gameplay feels despite its ultra-modern controls, accommodating up to four players, and its visually appealing pixel artistry.
Indeed, creating a game for NES was a ‘childhood dream’ for Riecke, who tells us about the fond memories he made playing the console at a friend’s house. Naturally, these memories have been intricately woven into the DNA of the games Morphcat Games make. Fan favourites include ‘Micro Mages,’ ‘Böbl,’ and ‘Spacegulls’- each showcasing the commitment to high-quality game development and advancing the console’s capabilities.
The absolute control offered by coding in assembly language (a type of code interpretable by a computer’s CPU) was admittedly a demanding process, but Riecke and Bétoux took it in their stride. This method allowed them to control every aspect of the NES fully, unconstrained by the modern higher-level programming languages.
Currently, Morphcat Games is dipping its toe in the current generation console market, with Bétoux hinting at potential projects for the Nintendo Switch in 2024. Despite this move to modern consoles, they remain hopeful for the future of the NES, stating it continues to thrive through their fun and enjoyable aftermarket games.
