Texas Stock Exchange Launches to Compete with NYSE and Nasdaq

A new competitor to Wall Street launched on Friday as the Texas Stock Exchange (TXSE) became fully operational for trading. Based in Dallas, this exchange is significant as it is the first major stock exchange to open in the United States in several decades. The TXSE, pronounced “Tex-ee,” aims to challenge established giants like the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq for listings.

The exchange is backed by well-known financial institutions, including BlackRock, Goldman Sachs, and Charles Schwab. It plans to begin corporate listings later this year and to facilitate initial public offerings (IPOs) starting in 2027. The TXSE considers Texas and the surrounding southern region, which it calls the “Boom Belt,” to be pivotal for American capitalism.

The Boom Belt region has an impressive annual GDP of $8.9 trillion, greater than all countries except the U.S. and China. Notably, 40% of U.S. exports pass through this area, and it has been responsible for 57% of U.S. job growth in the past five years. The exchange currently operates from temporary offices in the Uptown area of Dallas, where it held a bell-ringing ceremony to celebrate its launch.

Looking ahead, the Texas Stock Exchange plans to establish its permanent headquarters in the Bank of America Tower, set to be the tallest building in Uptown Dallas. This site will feature offices, a business museum, and a broadcast studio.

The opening of the TXSE coincides with Texas’s efforts to attract businesses seeking to relocate, thanks to its favourable policies compared to states like California and New York.
