Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced its decision to acquire Cinemersive Labs, a UK-based company that specialises in machine learning and computer vision. This acquisition is significant as it indicates Sony’s commitment to enhancing game visuals through advanced technology.
Cinemersive Labs, established in 2022, focuses on transforming two-dimensional photographs into immersive three-dimensional experiences. It will join Sony’s research and development department, the Visual Computing Group, which emphasises the use of neural networks and machine learning to elevate gameplay.
In a statement, Sony Interactive Entertainment highlighted its ongoing efforts to push the boundaries of visual computing to create richer gameplay experiences. By integrating Cinemersive Labs into its Visual Computing Group, Sony aims to advance visual technology in gaming. This includes utilising machine learning to enhance gameplay visuals, refine rendering techniques, and offer players improved visual fidelity.
While the specifics of their innovations are not widely publicised, one project, known as PSSR, might exemplify the type of advancements this group is working on. PSSR is an upscaling technology that employs artificial intelligence to enhance images to higher resolutions, thereby improving overall image quality across games.
Although the details of Cinemersive Labs’ initiatives may not be visible to the public immediately, it is anticipated that their contributions will be reflected in future PlayStation software, potentially impacting the forthcoming PS6 console.
As developments unfold, further insights into how this acquisition will shape the gaming landscape may emerge, but immediate public visibility is expected to be limited.
